BlockJoy started in 2021 as a staking side project for friends and became a company with a contrarian thesis: the cloud is the wrong place to run blockchain infrastructure.
We run white-label nodes on dedicated bare metal, orchestrated by BlockVisor, our provisioning layer written in Rust. Cutting out cloud margins drops node operating costs by as much as 80%. In early 2023 we raised about $11 million from Gradient Ventures, Draper Dragon, Active Capital, and others, and organizations from exchanges to the Helium Foundation ran nodes with us.
Founding a company in the middle of a bubble clarifies your thinking. Narratives come and go. Unit economics survive. We built for the customers who would still need nodes after the music stopped, and that’s exactly who stayed.
Sean Carey, one of Helium’s original founders, was my co-founder and CTO. We also ran a podcast called WTF Web3, mostly to complain accurately about cloud bills.
