Chris Bruce is a product and engineering leader headquartered in Berlin, with deep roots in San Francisco and regular working time in both cities. He has founded five startups and sold two of them: Sproutling, the learning baby monitor he ran as co-founder and CEO, went to Mattel in 2016, and Rupture, where he was on the early team, went to Electronic Arts in 2008.
I’ve spent thirty years split evenly between the product side and the engineering side. I write the code and I own the roadmap. Most companies keep those jobs separate, then spend half their energy translating between the two camps. Having both in one head is the cheapest advantage I know, and it’s why engineers and product teams both tend to relax when I’m in the room.
I’ve also watched four bubbles up close: social gaming with Rupture and Diversion, consumer hardware with Sproutling, crypto with Helium and BlockJoy, and the AI wave we’re in now. Every one taught the same lesson. The winners were rarely the best technology. They were the best story attached to good-enough technology.
That lesson is why my current chapter is Seceda Studios, a film studio in Berlin with a compiler in the back room. AI has made building software nearly free. Attention hasn’t gotten any cheaper. Product judgment, brand, and storytelling now decide who gets used, so that’s the muscle I train daily, on set and in the terminal.
A note on geography: Berlin is home base, but San Francisco built me. Every company on this timeline before 2023 was built there, and I’m back often enough that both cities count. If you’re building in either one, we can probably meet in person.
