Diversion
Founder & Lead Developer
Diversion made Facebook games where you starred in virtual movies: FameTown and The A-List. I founded it in 2010 with Dayvid Iannaci, Amir Haleem, and Jason Carlton, and built the games as lead developer.
We raised from Eric Schmidt’s TomorrowVentures, Hearst, and Michael Eisner’s Tornante, with Shawn Fanning as a founding advisor and a seven-figure ad deal from Sony Pictures. On paper, a dream cap table.
Then the social gaming bubble did what bubbles do. Facebook throttled the viral channels, user acquisition costs tripled, and Zynga consumed the category right before the category shrank. We wound down in 2012.
Diversion taught me more per month than any company since. Platform risk is real. Virality is a channel, not a business model. And the people outlast the company: Amir and I built together again at Helium.
