Rupture
Early team → acquired by EA, 2008
Rupture was a social layer for World of Warcraft players: profiles, achievements, guild pages. Shawn Fanning of Napster fame founded it, and I was on the early team writing the systems that turned game data into something social.
This was the opening act of the social gaming bubble. Facebook had just opened its platform, Zynga was about to print money with FarmVille, and every investor wanted games-plus-social. Electronic Arts bought Rupture in 2008, in a deal reported at $30 million.
First startup, first acquisition, first lesson in how bubbles work: the wave lifts you for reasons that have little to do with your code.
